Sep 13, 2021

Having trouble continuing conversations with your loved ones? Frequently asking others to repeat or to speak up? That is how hearing loss affects our everyday communication with others. People who procrastinate to get their ears checked for too long become less able to understand speech over time.

The severity of hearing impairment is categorized by how much louder volumes need to be set at before you are able to detect a sound. There are 5 hearing loss categories of hearing loss; mild, moderate, moderately severe, severe and profound.

Mild hearing loss

  • Able to hear but may not understand conversations clearly
  • Difficulty hearing when a person is facing away or when standing some distance away from them
  • Difficulty hearing when in noisy environments

Moderate hearing loss

  • Soft and moderately loud noises are not heard.
  • You have difficulty hearing regular speech, even at close distances.

Severe hearing loss

  • Conversations have to be conducted loudly.
  • Most conversational speech is not heard.
  • Group conversations require a lot of effort.

Profound hearing loss

  • Some extremely loud noises are heard
  • You may only perceive loud sounds as vibrations.
  • Without a hearing aid, communication is no longer possible even with effort and concentration.

Don’t procrastinate for too long as it may lead to negative side-effects. The first step is to take a hearing test!
